If you add the extra 14" bay to the back, I'd feel free to add 2" to the front, maybe even 3" if you don't mind putting the battery behind the main spar or even further back. I have about four pounds of elevator weight back in the horizontal stabilizer. The Corvair is heavy, and will need to go close to the firewall. My starter is about a 1/4" from the firewall, and with a front starter, it could be even closer, if you needed it. Of course the engine mount is the last thing I'd build after everything else is done. I'd be interested to know what Larry Flesner did up front, since he's even taller and long in the legs.
