If the photo we received from the protocol is small, saving the original image (without padding) won't help any, as the image will end up being mis- scaled or displayed at its original size (which will still be small). Or if the photo received is bigger than 96x96, I think scaling it to 96x96 is a good decision (as we don't use avatars bigger than that anywhere in kopete. So if you can explain a bit more how this can improve the displaying of avatars, it would be very good.
