I don't really see the problem here.

Please explain how this can help solving the problem. If the photo we  
received from the protocol is small, saving the original image  
(without padding) won't help any, as the image will end up being mis- 
scaled or displayed at its original size (which will still be small).

Or if the photo received is bigger than 96x96, I think scaling it to  
96x96 is a good decision (as we don't use avatars bigger than that  
anywhere in kopete.

So if you can explain a bit more how this can improve the displaying  
of avatars, it would be very good.
