I've attached the ubuntu-bug dump for the laptop. I confirmed that snd- modules are loaded. The sound card is detected by lshw and lspci. It's a Intel Corporation Device 9d71. Fastboot is not enabled; boot is "thorough". The sound card *did* work on two separate occasions - i.e. was detected successfully. On all subsequent boots it is not detected. See also bugs 1641028 and 1649668. Googling for this device also shows a smattering of other problems that people are having with it.
