I used to live partly from donations, so here are my 2 cents: money got never demotivated me, I always felt that as an appreciation for my work, even if it was a little amount. Having a setup that allows such kind of donations directly to developers (instead of each developer setting up a way to get the money) would be nice, although I'm not sure how it can be done legally. Remember, this is different from "fix my bug for money", although if that is agreed by both a developer and the user, I see no problem. Are there risks? Yes, there are. Just like in any patch coming from a developer. If the developer is an insider in the community, usually he/she is trusted about the code quality. If the patch comes from outside, it is usually reviewed. I think it is noones business if that code was paid for or not.
