This is my personal opinion. Motivation comes from the "open" rewards of the community.A mail,a ping in irc,etc.. The fact that i will hang with some KDE people motivates me.
Trolling,whining doesn't motivate me.Money doesn't motivate me. If someone wants to help the developers economically then he is able to donate to the ev. I code for KDE because it is my hobby.If the money gets into the way then there will be no fun..
