The system uses the thumbnail to extract the dimensions of the **Unknown** face. Known (confirmed) face thumbnails are not used because the face dimensions have already been extracted and saved. The face engine uses the internal thumbnail service. I'll do some tests to see how the thumbnail service handles a request when the thumbnail DB is missing, or if the DB doesn't have a thumbnail for the face.
