I am in a hurry to complete stud's projects before Christmas holiday.
I try to give an answer going back to what I remember (from 1.4.2 to Night
built) about OJ for Ubuntu,ù
after Christmases I will do some deeper tests.
The main problem under Ubuntu, regarding OJ NB (1.4.3?) is connected to file
chooser dialog: too long and the arrow for dropping down menu is not visible.
This bug comes out only if you choose "Open.." menu and go to "File" option .
If you follow other ways (like using directly "Open file..." menu) it works
fine.
I suspect that this bug came out (at least in Ubuntu) after adding "All
supported file" option - this plugin reads all supported extension and writes
on the menu option. The problem is that this plugin reads also world file
extension (.tfw, .jgw, etc) and recognize them as "supported file too" - no way
to open a jgw as it is a text file!
I added a screenshot about this bug.
An extra information about this bug
- The long file chooser dialog is alway there. I tested with Iced tea 1.6, Iced
tea 1.7 and Oracle Jre 1.6. Iced Tea 1.6 is the java machine used by Ubuntu in
the last distros. With all OJ NB I have installed in my computer (201111, 201111
- the arrow to drop down menu is not visible with Iced Tea (1.6 or 1.7) and
Oracle java depending to the version of OJ
Likely I have some testing OJ NB of September where I localized that
a) this latter bug was present on version OpenJUMP-20111106-r2511 Nov 6th
b) It was disappeared on version OpenJUMP-2011111 (I have no serial number, I
found written "testing version"), Nov 11th
c) it was again on version OpenJUMP-20111113-r2528 Nov. 13
In the last version of NB OpenJUMP-20111217-r2552 the "long menu" is there but
the arrow is visible
Now all my impression are only empiric. I did no variation on OJ core to see
other possibilities. I ask Ede to make an experimental version oj OJ NB
(December) and see, on Ubuntu, if this bug of file chooser dialog is connected
to the option "all supported file".
Now, on my opinion this is not really a big bug. With "regular" monitor, user
can easily use the "long menu" and it is always possible to drop down even with
no arrow. But it becomes a big problem if you use laptop with small screen (11"
or similar)
- I didn't see other evident bugs. I would vote to add OJ NB, as a special
version OJ, to OSGeo-Live 5.5 release. But we should correct this bug, probably
hidden at the moment "all supported files" (if this is the origin of the bug)
- On the other hand, if we add OJ NB on OSGeo-Live, we should make a new real.
of OJ. There are some important modifications between last NB and 1.4.2, that
make "OJ 1.5" more worth to use. For instance the new Horizontal position on
label option made by Michael. Or the new "conglomerates" of different plugin in
the "Tool" menu (Union/dissolve, etc). But we probably have no resource, time,
etc to do in few days (maybe in few months), not even (more important) to test
any new/old bugs
- It is probably better to use OJ 1.4.2 on OSGeo-Live 5.5 without thinking to
make a Marry Christmas version of Openjump in few days
When I have time I will do other tests. Right now everything seems fine (except
"long menu")

bigger. i couldn't lay a hand on the file dialog so far.
Peppe: Could you check 1.4.2 on linux again and come back if you find show
stoppers? Maybe we should pimp 1.4.2 a little and distribute a 1.4.3 interim
version with the most important bugfixes from trunk?
