I just checked and OpenJump already has this feature implemented. To see it in action, (in a new task) create a new layer by dragging out a few rectangles. Then Save Dataset As... "test.shp". Now add some linstrings to the layer and choose Save Selected Datasets. It should move the linstrings to "test_line" and save that as a shapefile too.
