Hi, I have a very limited knowledge about imagery stuff. I know that erwan's team has done a good job in orbisgis with a library called ImageJ wich is a nice, small, pure java library. I see some advantages to use such a library compared to JAI which is more heavy and use native code. On the other hand, JAI can read jpeg2000 and may have some other advantages (used by most of other java-based gis).
