I found the class in question, which is the com.vividsolutions.jump.workbench.ui.zoom.ZoomBar class.
I will be modifying this class so that it doesn't display metric units, but instead a "unitless" number. I will NOT be commiting this class to the SVN, but will be using it in my own OpenJUMP build. If there are other JUMP users/developers in the United States that would like a unitless ZoomBar class I will make this available.
