So at the end of the day, it comes down to this:

- We can increase selector speeds at the expense of file size

or

- We can continue to focus on providing tight code in a small package and take what is arguably a small hit in speed

Since most browsers cache the .js file on the first hit, wouldn't a small size
only be most valuable on the first page? I'm wondering how much benefit is
derived from a small file size beyond the first page hit.

As for speed improvements, they provide value on every page, not just the first
hit. So my vote would be for improving the speed at the expense of file size.
