Noted - Ishan and you have both made your preference there pretty clear. I
remain open to different perspectives and will think it over.
That said, for now I remain committed to "progress-over-perfection" in this as
in most things. As a community we've seen way too many large promising efforts
"iterate on a branch" so long that they become impossible to review, merge, or
backport. Avoiding that was one of my main goals when deciding how to
structure this development. That does open us up to certain risks, like
unreleased builds seeing perf degradation as described in this ticket. But
everything has tradeoffs, and I remain confident that we can address these
before a still-pretty-distant 9.2.
