Yeah agreed. I can't pretend to really understand what's going on here just yet (hence opening #818 with the title "review [...]" as opposed to "revert [...]"). I think it definitely warrants further investigation though, so figured it'd be worth it to start collecting possible examples and looking more closely. I'm not sure how/why I was "lucky" enough that this issue seemed to be somewhat reproducible for me, but I'm not entirely surprised that you weren't able to reproduce it. It consistently threw errors, but associated with a varying number of tests in the TestReplicationHandler suite, fwiw ... I'll note also that your recent ["+0" vote on 9.0 RC3](https://lists.apache.org/thread/pwxd4mpn1zr8263l86w41t8fghcnfs6l) mentioned "TestReplicationHandler -- didn't reproduce. The logs refer to 'java.lang.AssertionError: Directory not closed'", which is exactly how this manifested for me when I was able to get it to reproduce. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
