Jan Høydahl commented on SOLR-15949:
------------------------------------

I think it may be a bit too much to flip to Java17 Azul and Alpine at the same
time :) If we do, we should keep publishing a debian variant (with JDK?)...

I see that to get e.g. a Temurin JRE we'd need to use multi-stage docker build
with JLink which then excludes official images.
Think I've said it before, I'd be willing to scrap official images and promote
use of "apache/solr" namespace on Docker Hub, then we gain full control over
our docker builds. But what would we miss out on?

PS: Would be interesting to explore packaging Solr as a native app with JLink
and shave off JRE modules we do not use. But I fear it will not be simple given
Jetty and lack of module system support in Solr.

> I propose that our Docker image for Solr 9 use Java 17, the latest LTS
> release of Java. A change like this ought to only occur on a major version,
> and hence I propose doing it now.
