Was Grace Hopper a mentor for any of you?  She is supposed to be the Grandmother of programming, right?

I've often wondered what it is that has encouraged me to break with traditional female roles and forge my way into traditionally male areas.  In reflecting upon your question, the only thing that screams out to me is the urging of my aunt when I was in Grade School and Jr. High.  She urged me to think for myself, overcome shyness, and never, ever be afraid to ask questions.  I can't tell you how many times she told me to ask, ask, ask when something wasn't clear - and I applied that wisdom to school, work, and personal life.  By understanding the reasons, rather than just accepting them, I have been able to apply the experience and wisdom of others to new situations that come up in the computer industry.

While I'm not a techie, I serve on the Linux Professional Institute Advisory Council, Chair the Linux International Marketing Committee and currently I'm Vice President of Sales for LinuxMall.com.  I am the working parent in a family of five, devoting countless hours to volunteering for Girl Scouts, animal care organizations, and am active in my church.  Many of these roles are traditionally male, while others are traditionally female.  I've had to deal with lots of paradigm issues in my life, but I do what interests me, and I serve where God leads me - regardless of my gender.

Hope this helps!
Julie

Who, if any woman, has inspired you to be a Linux Chik?  I'm trying to develop a mentoring program for young women to meet & be inspired by female high tech "success stories".  Know any?
Thanks!
