Hi,

My answer is going to be way unpopular. I convert my résumé to Word
format, and check it on a Windows box somewhere, and do what the recruiters
ask. 99% of recruiters and corporate HR people are clueless, but they can
open or close the doors to really good jobs. I could never have been hired
into my present job without solid UNIX experience, a knowledge of firewalls
and security, and so on. Still, if I hadn't sent my résumé in Word format,
I would never have been considered.
Is that totally stupid? Yep, it is. It's also the way the world works. I
play their game to get what I want, then, once I am where I can make a
difference, I do it.
My first project on this job was an audit of their firewall security.
(CheckPoint Firewall 1 on a Sun box.) I got to tell them that they had so
many holes their firewall looked like swiss cheese. The holes are closed
now. Recently I audited security on their web servers, which are IIS/NT.
That gave me an opportunity not only to describe how much of what Microsoft
recommends for security wasn't done, but why moving off of Windows would
enhance security at little or no cost. My manager agrees that a UNIX-based
solution would be far better, and now he will try to convince the customer.
Is that interesting work? Yes. Do I get to do *nix advocacy? Yes. Do we
have Linux boxes in our test lab now? Yes. Did we when I got here?
Absolutely not.
I'm a network engineer (with management experience), and I've found that
once I get to a technical interview, my chances of getting hired are
excellent. The problem is getting through the HR and recruiter types
first, and unfortunately, I have to speak their language, as idiotic as it
sometimes seems to me, to get past them.
Just my .02....
All the best,
Caity
