I didn't have a car for the longest time. Mostly for financial
reasons. But the problem I found with not having a car is that 1) If
it's a pain in the butt to get to the grocery store, I won't go more
than once every 3 months, and if I want to eat reasonably healthy, I
need to go once a week and get fresh vegetables/fruits. 2) Bikes get
stolen, and in the middle of winter, you don't have the option of going
by bike, it's too cold, and if there's snow on the ground, it's really
dangerous. 3) You have to have a LOT of free time to take the bus
places. What will take you 10 mins by car can take an hour by bus, not
to mention waiting forever for it. 4) Jobs... you are REALLY limited as
to what job you can take if you don't have a car.

And now, I own a car and yes it takes a huge bite out of my pocket
money, but my job requires that I have a car. They even pay a car
allowance.
