Speaking for myself, I've been without motor transportation
for 6 years now. Here in the U.S., (with the exception of
Manhattan maybe) that's virtually unheard of ... we're
conditioned from birth that you -have- to have a car.

I got rid of my car for purely financial reasons and the
benefits turned out to be way more than that (freedom from
a huge material possession, patronizing the local businesses
instead of always traveling to shop/eat, fitness, the
psychological buzz of knowing I got from A to B under
my own power...). Several months though, facing a
class schedule spread out over several campus' all over
town and pining for an IT/IS job where 90% of the jobs
are outside the city (where I live), I was also faced with
the drive/don't drive dilemma. I really didn't want to
sell out and get a car just as a sometime time saver on
random commutes.

So I chose a middle ground; a 1978 Honda Express
scooter! With a 50cc engine and a top speed of 30mph
(downhill), the state of Missouri doesn't require me to
license, register or insure it. Best of all, in this land where
most people have never seen a scooter, it just screams
"counter-culture!"
