Is it possible that word has simply gotten out that the class is being
taught by a woman, and you've released a pent-up demand amongst women
who are more comfortable being taught this tech by a woman?
Oh--hi, list-denizens. I'm new to the list here, and may have a few
interesting things to say, having been on both sides of the genderline
in tech.
I learned programming in high school. That wouldn't be so remarkable if
it hadn't happened in 1968-1970...so that means I've been programmming
for thirty years now (brief pause while my age depresses me :-) )
I only have two years experience as a woman in tech, though, becacuse
that's how long I've been transitioned to a female role. My
sex-rassignment surgery was successfully performed last January.
Some of my own most interesting headtrips have been about what I've had
to give up, and what I've been able to keep, while becoming more fully
myself. One on the sub-themes of that has been how to continue to
project authority in technical spaces while still being authentically
female--because many of my own interactions had been based on male
social styles. Even though it wasn't really who I felt myself to be, it
was successful, probably because it was what people expected.
