The Mac version of Excel had gone through at least five upgrades (the
previous version was Excel 5.0) when Office '98 for the Mac was released.
There had been a lull in upgrades in the mid to late nineties.  Also, I'm
pretty sure Excel for the Mac existed before Excel for Windows.
