I see this field is set by the task thread, but it is read by the network
thread (right?).
I'm pretty sure in most of the cases there is a fence, but we can't
guarantee it.
Should we make it `final` or `volatile`?
(we could cache `volatile` value if we guarantee that it's never changed
once set).
