I'm not going to get into the whole "it can be done in userland why do we need it in core" debate, because honestly that's a silly discussion to have when you don't have any planned implementation to discuss the merits of. The only reason I wanted to respond was your last line, quoted above. Being "around" when something happens means zero as far as credibility or knowledge.
