Yes, unfortunately, PHP features not compatible with the PHP 5 interpreter will 
be harder to adopt for most developers, even if they are not technically BC 
breaks.

I agree with your POV, as I now  think that it shouldn't be included in the 
core, provided we have the needed hooks. I explain the hooks we need in the 
draft RFC. Can you tell me if it seems possible to you ?
