Why does it have to be in core php in order for *your* code to run smoothly?

I'd like to remind you that if was *you* who proposed some weeks ago
that people should patch and maintain their own PHP if they don't want
their apps to break because of the reference fix in 4.4.0. So why
don't you just patch your own PHP for that purpose? Because you're a
core developer?

I really appreciate the huge amount of work you and others put in PHP.
But this is really getting a bit weird now... BC breaks in bugfix
releases, one BC break in RC5 (curly braces), the next one in RC6...
