I think the majority of "kernel people" spend too much time with C to worry about compiling php and using it day-to-day. As for recompiling, I prefer menuconfig generally - just makes my life easier; and to be honest, I think that'd go for most people who compile stuff reguarly (4-5 times a month, I'm using for reguarly) rather than on a daily basis. Daily basis, obviously, it becomes easier to do it by hand. Going back to what you said earlier about useability and how that's what drove php forward, Rasmus - doesn't that transpose itself into the compilation stage as well? Wouldn't it be easier for people to get used to compilation through something simple rather than something which, to be frank, the --with-foo and --with-bar lines seem to stretch into eternity on particular configs. I'm not saying the existing way is bad, or hard - I like it - I'm just wondering if the complexity of the configuration might put some people off who arn't used to long configures. I certinally don't remember anything (documentation wise at least) at the end of php3, early php4 which was when I started. > Regardless, these are not to orthogonal concepts.
