I have an IMAP account and its mbsync'd local copy. I recently made some
changes, and now many messages do not come up unless I load them all at
once (which is not feasible).

Same exact problem, both remotely and locally. Sorting by date

(setopt gnus-article-sort-functions '(gnus-article-sort-by-date))

does not help. (Hm!) And the article numbers are out of whack: the messages
from last year are numbered higher than those from yesterday.

Relevant or not: it's a Gmail account, so I was ready to blame
everything on them, EXCEPT that my phone handles this situation
perfectly.

So, how do I tell GNUS to disregard the article numbers?

Many thanks.
