Yes, I think this is more or less the situation.

A correction: with .newsrc I rather meant ".newsrc.eld", and if you do
have wrong article number associated data stored somewhere, this file is
where it should be found I think.

But you know as much as I or more, can investigate well but you have
access to the problem (in contrast to me) so I don't think I can help
much at all...
