Objet : Re: [INDOLOGY] gato 'stam arkaH

Dear Harald,

These quotations come from Kāvyaprakāśa of Mammaṭa (V.240). Mammaṭa sees ten
suggested meanings (vyaṅgyo ‘rthaḥ) in the sentence "gato ‘stam arkaḥ".

Dear list members,

gato 'stam arkaH (“the sun is setting”) might be an indication of time (so
Daṇḍin's Kāvyādarśa 2.224).

Elsewhere (and that is relevant for me), gato 'stam arkaH is understood to
suggest

  1. to Brahmins to perform their evening rituals or

  2. to traders to close their shops.

Could you, please, help me with quotations to these or similar effects.

Yours sincerely

Harald Wiese
