You are right - it would be useful to provide some free support and security 
updates to
a particular release I'm sure the wheels are turning to develop this 
somewhere...

   I am aware of the support repository and my understanding is that this is 
for paid support; however, the first line of initial article in this thread 
indicates that Oracle doesn't plan to continue selling support for OpenSolaris 
stable releases. If that is the case, then this paid repository would 
eventually be closed. The question I was answering would be "would a free, 
perhaps more limited, replacement be useful?  And my answer was yes. A six 
month release cycle with updates from a paid support repository makes sense to 
me. But if you remove the update capability, whether paid or free, then the 
release cycle becomes too long. Some update capability would be needed to keep 
the repository useful. I'm not particular as to how that capability is 
implemented as long as it is reasonably easy to use.
