Linux seen grabbing 10% of desktop OS segment
Sanjay K Pillai in Chennai Published : February 26, 2003 Linux, the cash-saving open source option to costly proprietary operating
system (OS) such as Microsoft’s Windows operating system, is now seen to be
gaining ground in the desktop market in India.
Thus far, Linux has been a dominant force only in the worldwide server market and has grabbed impressive market share from Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. The desktop market has so far been the monopoly of Microsoft. But things are changing. Says Amit Bhoraskar, manager - channels for Red Hat India, a Linux vendor: “By December 2003 we expect the Linux operating system to be installed in two lakh desktop personal computers in India”. That would mean that, of the MAIT projected sales of 2 million desktop PCs in India, Linux would have a market share of 10 per cent in the desktop segment.
