Even if you are the only user, I suggest that you not to do this as it is
always possible to accidently erase some system files and your system may
become unusable. So, preferably, create a normal user account and use it for
other tasks and root only under special cases. As far as executing some
commands which is possible only in superuser mode, fire up a shell, and on
the prompt, give the command :
        su - root
The system will prompt for a password (the root password)
If the password is correct, you are then logged in as superuser. So, you can
do everything here without jeopardising the whole system. As far as you are
concerned, you are superuser only from that shell. Everything else, runs as
normal user.
IMHO, this is the better approach.

Sorry, I have no idea about modem problems, maybe others could chip in.
