--- Begin Message --- imagine the following :
1.U r in Windows 9x etc and have created a dialup connection(thts very easy).now when u click connect it start to dial and a wierd string of noises starts coming and them silence for some time while it is verifying the username and password etc....and lo and behold..u get connected to the net.
now the next thing u have to imagine:
2.u r in linux.new installation... u go to the start menu(as i call it)
and go to system tool or sumthing like tht and start internet connection wizard.u just keep on enterring the information and the connection is made in the network connections dialog box..till here it is all smooth sailing.now u click activate and the modem start dialing and a pop-up comes saying "activating ppp0 device" (something like this...very identical)and then the wierd sound is repeated and the lights come on and they start blinking as though showing tht it is veryfying thr username and password.but as per avneesh the 'activating device' window should minimise or go away....But this is where i get stuck... the bloody thing dials and then i can see it getting disconnected (by seeing the modem lights go off) and i am unable to connect to my isp.
now i think u'll get a better picture of wat i am experiencing here.my modem is an external U.S. Robotics Sportster model.
pls reply asap....
thanks

can't really say where you're going wrong with whatever you're using
to dial in to you're ISP (Some more detail from your side might help)

A good alternative could be a command line dialer called wvdial. So
what you basically do here is, login as root and type the following

'wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf'

this creates a wvdial.conf in your etc directory, which you edit using
any editor. What follows is you changing the Phone No., User Name,
Password in the wvdial.conf.

After you're finished changing wvdial.conf, all you do is type 'wvdial'
on your prompt, and there it is.

and dont worry, dude, it wont be long before you catch up with Avneesh.
