Hi,

I think that migration will not be an easy job. Bosses may agree to shift, because cost  reduction is becoming a major challenge,  but then How we will Proceed .

Migration as per me is shifting from one plateform to another without reconstructing everything from scratch, and that involves a LOT of thinking.

what we need is a very deep understanding of Both the products MS$$ as well as Linux. For example i will try to give some common Scenerio:

1. I have an NT 4.0 domain providing file and print services to 500 user running windows 95. how to replace this NT server with a SAMBA server so that on Sunday this migration is done and on Monday user are working without knowing anything.

I can see that they will not agree to replace all the machines with Linux and then teach these 500 user that now onwards there will be C: D: , but /HOME only. Now onwards you have to print to using lp.  Migration should involve very Small user Training requirement.

2. I have a a mail server running Exchange 5.5 , now how to shift from my user from 5.5 to send-mail without shutting down my existing server because no company can afford to shut down mailing system for even one day. Now the problem will be to move the Mail User and address books etc to send mail quickly (Without Fail).

For this team to be a sucess we have looks towards the Microsoft and their excellent Migration Strategy. How they moved user from Novell to NT 4.0 by their Migratin  Tools.

The above example may seem very trivial but even this will involve a lot of thinking on our part and some very deep planning is also required to develop such tool or procedures for Migration before proceding to the corporates for a Migration Talk.

Hoping that i am not trying to disappoint the Initiative.

Lastly of all i would like to say thanks to DHRUV for teaching me the Mailing list Etiquette, But I think he Himself forgot the RULE NO 4 posted at http://www.kandalaya.org/guidelines.html which say you should not get Personal, Be polite. Probably he wants that people should join his project, and should not talk about any other project, which is against Open Source Initiative. The open source is about freedom of choice if people dont choose to work on his project he should not start writing mails saying SO WHAT  as the greeting in reply to any ones mail. I think that is a huge offence on a mailing list. And Lastly i am new to any Indian mailing list but not certainly new to mailing lists in general.

Best regards,

sudhir
