I agree , when i faced this problem actually my MBR got currupt. I 
placed my HDD as secondary drive on my friends comp, used some 
Recovery softwares like , Get Data Back for FAT, Revive , 
Stellar,EasyRecovery Pro,Undelete for NT/XP ...... & so on ....

I only read from my drive & didn't write to the hdd, copied to 
second HDD.

Then when i had backed up everything i was ready to experiment 
with my HDD.
I ran Powerquest Partion Magic from Floppy , sellected my HDD, 
Right Clicked & Selected Undelete Partion.
This did the trick for me , hope this helps.
