You can always use your laptop for testing / use a virtual machine /
simulator. Even if hardware has to be bought, the cost can be considered as
an investment.

This is the also one of the main reasons why I want people to work on
hardware than software. What is the use of open source software if a closed
system is necessary to execute it?
