Hi, I am getting more and more fed up with the quality of tamil translation being done. I find a great emphasis on finding 'beautiful and esoteric' tamil words, and very little emphasis on conveying the exact meaning to people who only know Tamil. I feel that unless one has a thorough understanding of the source language (english), one cannot really translate properly. Unfortunately people are very uncritical - as long as it is in 'good' Tamil, they praise it without worrying whether it conveys the meaning or not. I am doing a fair amount of translation now, and would like to discuss these translations with people who are speakers of Tamil to see whether I am able to get the meaning across in simple Tamil that the common man can understand. So as not to irritate people who are not interested in this subject I will prefix all posts on this topic with [TAMTRANS] so that those not interested can filter out these mails with the keyword given. (please note that I am not a native speaker of Tamil and hence my grammar and spelling would need correction. I hope people on this list can help out.) One example I see is translating 'home' as வீடு, whereas according to the context it could be அறிமுகம், தொடக்கம், துவக்கம், புறபாடு etc. Anyway, I translated one sentence as:
தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட பொருட்களை ஒட்டுவதற்கான தற்காலிக இடத்தில் நகலெடுக்கவும். Does this make sense? If so, what would the common man understand from this sentence? -- regards kg http://lawgon.livejournal.com
