You can use a combination of SAMBA and openLDAP and with PAM module on
the Linux client.

Honestly, I haven't even thought of doing it as it restricts the freedom.

You can refer to OpenLDAP site. They have a wonderful document on LDAP,
however, I suggest to check on SAMBA site and they are sure to have
sample config file for SAMBA / LDAP implementation.

Interoperability with windows is a risky business, always. They (M$)
keep changing their APIs often. You may not be able to achieve 100%
interoperability.

It depends on your skills... I would suggest 10 days...

It is a joke... If you don't have a policy and if your users are not
following the policy then how ever you try to secure your network, you
will end up with a nice hole.

Remember, there are worms successfully written for Linux as well.

Honestly, I have no answer.

Open source is all about freedom... here you want to restrict... I know
those paranoid manager would have asked you.
