I am sure that the success of Ubuntu has motivated the Fedora developers to change a few things --- why not!? Conversely, one could argue that the success of Fedora's timely release cycles (OK, this is perhaps a bad time to be saying that :-) ) is probably what led to a few Debian developers and others to create Ubuntu! Deistributions can and do learn from each other all the time. At this point in time, when the number of users is still growing, the competition is generally a good thing for all distros --- no one is really _losing_.
