The web-apps that I've written and maintain are all written by hand, so don't start flaming me too soon. The learning curve to writing *good* html is quite high. My initial designs for my webapps were when my HTML and CSS skills were not that good, and we produced pathetic code that had to be hacked, over and over again, to get it to look respectable on all browsers. Of course, I learnt a lot in the process --- my app is XHTML strict now. I'm throwing a few points here, without supporting either side of the debate: 1. For a first timer who needs to create production level code, or who is getting paid for it --- perhaps, he can't afford to write it manually. He'd be better off with some WYSIAWYG editor (+ the php/python/ruby, which is easier to learn). Probably this holds more true if you just need to write one or two pages. 2. If you really want to learn writing web-apps, write everything by hand. 2. If you are a professional, write everything by hand. I also view CSS as a pathetic language/specification, although I still use it for the lack of an alternative.
