If you can afford to have your external command pipe or livestatus socket visible via tcp (web proxy, xinetd, etc) you may also just send passive check results over this method. In the future (2.4 to be exact) you’ll also have the REST api available allowing to simply pass check results via http client (curl, etc) from your clients passively into the “master”, or any other instance listening. Once the 2.4 release is due, I’d say the documentation will get updated to reflect these methods and best practices even more.
