If, as I gather, this is highly integrated into PL/I FILE access, it's very cool, but likely not reasonably convertible to modern PL/I. None of the PLI* or IBMB* macros appear to be extant. I'd think that a more generic version that provided GET/PUT routines would be feasible. And with the miracle of the pre-processor, it can still look like part of the language.
