Is it really required for tape drives ficons have to go via San switch ? Or
it can be connected directly ? Any particular reason if it has to be via

It depends.
For TS3500 with TS1140 you will have SAN switch inside and it is
required equipment.
For StorageTek drives you don't need the switch, but you can use it.
In general you there is no switch required between CPC and CU.
