Very rarely a storage vendor might require attachment of their storage device via a particular vendor-supported SAN switch in order to end up with a vendor-supported configuration. Even in those rare, exceptional cases it's not because the technology prohibits direct attachment. Sometimes a tape controller is required, with or without a SAN switch in the picture.
