Walt, It is probably a valid thought as the OP did not specify what type of volumes were being backed up.
Since both z/VM or z/OS Volumes could be offline for backup, just covering the bases. The other thought is that the OP is trying to backup offline volumes. I know FDR from Innovation can do that. I am not sure that DFDSS can backup offline volumes.
