Thanks, Peter. I didn't know about SIGYPROC and will look there!

Seems weird to me that they keep adding SYSUTxx requirements. They've gone from 
7 to 15 since whatever COBOL we were using on 2.4!

This is a straight question based on my ignorance: why DO we need all those? 
Since they seem to be all ephemeral, why can't they allocate them dynamically? 
Keep in mind that I barely know how to ask this question, so it's probably dumb.

You should look at the delivered sample PROC’s in <hlq>.SIGYPROC to help you 
configure your local compile procedure.  You would have seen the correct 
SYSMDECK DD specification there.

That said, I agree with you – redirecting SYSMDECK to SYSOUT should NOT cause a 
COBOL compiler failure.  I would call that an aparable defect.  It's a shame 
you can’t report it.

Maybe someone with a "real" IBM customer number will do it for the good of all.
