That's what I've done with old HDDs - remove platters from casing, scratch and bend them out of shape, and put platters into different bins heading to land-fill at different times. The drive electronics have gone - at a separate time - to the electrical waste bins at the recycling centre. SSDs will be trickier to destroy, possibly.
