If you can, get a copy of KNOPPIX (Linux), and burn it to a CD. Now boot that CD (it will be "live") and now you can use it to format the hard drives, over write them, etc. It is a good tool to have for diagnosing a machine or find out what all it actually has.

Or, you could tell it to install Knoppix on that machine and use it to play with.
