I switched to a Logitech trackball a couple decades back, the Marble Mouse,
and have been a trackball fan ever since. (I gather people love 'em or hate
'em; I turn out to be in the former camp.) I usually keep a spare or two
around, because I've long had the same problem you describe: After a while
the main button starts registering double-clicks. FWIW, I've found that
when that starts I can press firmly on that button, using more force than
needed (picture me being annoyed with it, which often isn't far from the
truth) and for a wonder it seems to return it to normal operation for a
while. But eventually there's nothing for it but to replace it.

I say "after a while", but it's not every few months; I can usually go
almost a year before it gets to be a problem. And for some reason my
current model is, gee, more than three years old I'm pretty sure. Maybe
they found and fixed the problem, or maybe I just happened to hit a good
one.

Always wired, for me. I've used a wireless mouse at church, and during a
service is the wrong time to realize that the mouse is getting funky and
needs new batteries. I'll use a wireless Bluetooth headset, but the rest of
the peripherals gotta get their power reliably.

Logitech used to be good but in my recent experience I'd say they are
putting too-cheap microswitches in them. I've had three mice (of different
Logitech models) all start signalling double-clicks when a button is pressed
once. Reviews on Amazon suggest lots of people have found the same. Before
this I had no problems, but had bought several mice - one for each of a
series of laptops and desktops.

It's probably deliberate so that users have to buy new mice every few
months.
