I hear ya, too bad leadership does now have the same insight;
the last site I worked was working towards getting off the MF and
spending many $$$$ for a x86 (32bit) solution - once the POC was a bust,
IBM came in a gave them a deal they could not refuse.
been working in the corporate world since 1977, in 1987 the second site
I was at we were told the mainframe was going away, distributed systems
were all the rage...
I learned what I could about Win, Dec Open/Vms old Dec (PDP), SCS
systems, AIX, and some others I don't remember, and I'm still working on
mainframe systems.
Thanks Dave for your insight

We drug 10 years out of a z9. Last several years, it would have been cheaper
(hardware maintenance and z/OS license charges) to upgrade to current model
minus 1 or even current model.
But, the mainframe was going away..... Our 5 year contract with a MFaaS site
runs out in October and it is looking like we will not be running z/OS after
that.

thanks, yes we got as much bang out of the box as we could before EOS,
and the plan was to 'outsource' or move the prod processing to a cloud
provider. now it looks like leadership has decided to purchase a new
processor, but they'd like to get every bit of juice out of this box
before they 'NEED' replace it.
thanks for your response

AFAIK it is not yet announced, but it seems it could be 2026 or 2027.
I mean EOS - end of support.
However this is one of several "end of life" dates. You cannot
purchase any upgrade to z13, including microcode activation of
resources already present in the machine.
z/OS 2.5 still supports z13, so most of the software will work on it
as well (there are exceptions).
So, the platform is moribund - it is still supported, but no HW
upgrades and it seems z/OS 2.6 will not support it. Good time to
change it.
