On your first thought -- IANAL, so I can't comment on which way is better or
safer. But companies have expensive lawyers for good reasons. So long as they
do their job and keep the company whole in the edge cases, I am content.

On your second thought -- Of course I am, or I wouldn't have said so. That
happens to be a not-always-small part of my regular day job, thank you very
much, so yes I am "equipped and willing". And there are a few more of us still
around.

Now whether the COMPANY thinks it is "equipped and willing" in the worst-case
scanrio is a different kettle of fish entirely, and way above my pay grade.

Two thoughts:

- Shmuel is certainly right that you need to worry that if there is a
bankruptcy -- not a sure thing; he might just drift away without formal
bankruptcy -- you have an uphill battle NOT having the source code treated as
an asset. The whole point of bankruptcy is tearing up all of those old
agreements that got the creditor into trouble and starting fresh with the
assets he has -- including the source code. If I were owed money by the
bankrupt company I would argue "heck no, ignore that burdensome old agreement,
sell the source to the highest bidder so the debtor can pay me what he owes me."

- Are you really, really, really sure that you are equipped and willing to
"support it yourself" old idiosyncratic assembler source code, in a timely
fashion?

Have your lawyers verify that the escrowed source code can't be treated as an
asset during bankruptcy.

With the right source code escrow language written into the contract,
"one-person operation" should not be a show-stopper unless the one person is
not appropriately responsive to product defect repair or requests for
reasonable product enhancements.

If very prompt defect repair is an important issue, write effective SLA's with
increasing financial penalties for delayed defect repair into the contract as
well.

We have had quite good luck with a few very helpful software products and very
responsive authors. Worst case, your company has the rights to the source code
and can continue to support it yourself until transitioning to another product
with active support.

Hi Chris,

I know nothing about this company/software and their claim, we're in the same
boat and I found them while researching. I haven't tried their software yet.

Here's their claim:

Z-Writer is the quick-code utility for z/OS mainframes. Its native syntax is
very similar to competing quick-code tools such as DYL-280, Easytrieve, Quikjob
and CA-Earl. If you are using one of those programs, you'll be able to run your
existing programs on Z-Writer with only minor changes.

And with our ZWDYL interface, you can actually run all your existing DYL-280
(VISION:Results) program without any changes to either the program code or the
JCL. Our ZWQUIK interface (beta) lets you do the same thing for your Quikjob
(VISION:Report) programs.

The company is called Pacific Systems Group and their website is

Ynw$ . Let me know if you check it out and how they work for you. I
will say I checked pricing and at least at this point in time for us, their
price isn't much less than the CA products we're looking to replace.

Rex

The site I support may soon be in the need for a load&go report writer

We would need an alternative to
       Culprit
       Eztrieve
       Quickjob
       Earl

Without any research - any other report writers come to mind?
